It's always nice to find a blog web site and see everyone talking about your own site, "Restore St. Mary's" in this case. I've poured 3 years of research into the site and the restoration 'cause.' Thanks for all your positive support for the 'Faithful Departed.' It is demonic what the City has done and is demonic how they continue to condone and maintain this 3000+ grave desecration despite the State & Federal civil law violations, not to mention all moral norms! Even elephants have more decency.

Here's some old new news....In 1922, the Mission San Buenaventura decided to build their new schoolhouse "Holy Cross School" right on top of 3,850 Catholic graves. This is the school house right next (west) to the Mission on Main St. I have been so busy with St. Mary's, I haven't been able to bring to light this desecration. If you go to www.restorestmarys.org and click on the top left hand corner an article from 1890 will come up explaining the Mission Cemetery.

So everyone who has died in San Buenaventura from 1790-1945, is now in a desecrated grave!

Welcome to Ventura Haunts Steve,

It was not until about two years ago or so that I was informed of the graves that still remain underneath the "Holy Cross School" and parking lot next door. It makes my stomach turn to thing that the city built a school and parking lot on to of those who have departed.

It seems as though you did lots of research into this matter. By the way, I was told that the majority of those buried at this location were young Chumash children. Can you clear this up for us?

Thank you for the link to the site; it is very interesting and also valuable information.

The Holy Cross School, just west of the Mission has 3,850 graves of men, women and children. They are the very first settlers to this area from all over the world. This school was built by the Roman Catholic Church, on Roman Catholic graves, not built by the City.

St. Mary's/Presb/Jewish Cemeteries are one mile east of the Mission's front door on Main St., now known as Cemetery Memorial Park. The 3,000 graves where desecrated by the City (though the Catholic Church sold them a portion of St. Mary's Cemetery for $15,000.00 in 1955 dollars). In 1955 the City put a parking lot and Recreational Center on top of some 500 graves. Then in 1965 the City returned to remove all of the remaining headstones etc. of all the cemeteries to change it into a 'Poop Park.' In 1972, after serious foundation problems, the City was forced to demolish the entire structure. It was that unsafe for public occupancy. They left the parking lot in place, as you see it today.

I am one of the most politically correct and religiously unsympathetic persons in this world, but that's just f*ed up. I don't even wanna know their reasons for building a school on top of a cemetery with the graves STILL THERE. There are some things people JUST SHOULDN'T DO. And that's one of them. Doesn't matter who's burried there- that's just wrong.

What would cause a spirit to 'haunt' this dimension, our '5-sense' reality?

I have heard that it's a person that has met with a tragic death, but other times I have heard that it's simply a playful spirit that chooses to be 'here.'

Major General William Vandever, who put together Yosmite National Park and Sequoia National Park, a 3-term Congressman is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery (Cemetery Memorial Park).

Senora Olivas is buried there. The great photographer Brewster and his wife are buried there.

There's Private John Sumners, who fought in the Indian Wars in Arizona. He and his entire Company B, were given the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1869 for their 'galantry-in-a-charge' against the Apaches.

Jose de la Rosa, the first printer in California and the 'Woody Guthrie' of early Spanish California Folk music is buried beneath the 'Holy Cross School' next to the Mission.

The list goes on & on for local and national history, right here in town.

You'd be hearing from me if you put a school house on top of my grave. I don't think I'd go along with you pulling out my headstone and throwing it in the barranca either. And the constant dog poop....

I'm not even dead yet and I'm haunting this town!
